World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on September 27th to raise awareness about the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political, and economic value. India has a rich cultural heritage and is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As of September 2023, there are 42 World Heritage Sites located in India, out of which 34 are cultural, 7 are natural, and one is of mixed type.
Some of the recently declared World Heritage Sites from India by UNESCO include:
- Santiniketan, West Bengal (2023)
- Dholavira, Harappan City in the Rann of Kutchh, Gujarat (2021)
- Rudreswara Temple (Ramappa Temple) at Palampet, Warangal, Telangana (2021)

India's cultural heritage sites are a major attraction for tourists from all over the world. The government of India has taken several initiatives to promote tourism in the country, including the "Incredible India" campaign and the development of infrastructure in tourist destinations. World Tourism Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the importance of tourism and to promote sustainable tourism practices that benefit both tourists and local communities.
