- 2019 – 100 years old building in Mumbai, India, collapsed, killing at least 10 people and many remaining trapped.
- 2013 – As many as 27 children die and 25 others are hospitalized after eating lunch served at their school in eastern India.
- 1856 - The Hindu Widow Remarriage Act was legalized. The Act was enacted on 26th July 1856. Social Reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar played a major role in the establishment of this act, before this act the Sati Custom was also abolished.

- 1936 – Venkataraman Subramanya, Indian-Australian cricketer
- 1909 - Aruna Asaf Ali, a freedom fighter who is remembered for hoisting our National flag at August Kranti Maidan during a Quit India Movement in 1942. She went on to become the first Mayor of Delhi and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan & Bharat Ratna for her contributions.
