Historical events witnessed by Ramlila Maidan, Delhi, India

One of the most popular and politically active grounds in India, Ramlila Maidan has witnessed many historical events. The oldest event being recorded is the Ram Leela (An act enacted to recreate the life of Lord Rama on stage and the life story of Lord Rama is shown through the act.) performed during the reign of last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.

1961 - Our first Prime Minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru had held a public meeting welcoming the then Queen of England Queen Elizabeth II.
1963 - "The Nightingale of Bollywood", the Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar had sung the song "Aye Mere Watan Ke logon" in the presence of Jawaharlal Nehru.
1965 - The then Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri had given his most popular slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan."
1975 - 25th June. JP or Lok Nayak or Jayaprakash Narayan had staged a mammoth rally along with some other political opponents of Indira Gandhi.
2011 - 9th August. Anti Corruption crusader Anna Hazare sat on fast for the passing of Jan Lokpal Bill and making it a law in India. He was joined by an RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi and many other activists like Kumar Vishwas, Medha Patkar and Prashant Bhushan to name a few.
2013 - Oath ceremony for the post of Chief Minister of Delhi by Arvind Kejriwal was held.
2015 - 14th February. Arvind Kejriwal again decided to take the oath for Chief Minister of Delhi here only.
